Hot summer days bring with them cravings for frozen ice cream treats. But, if you’re trying to live a healthy lifestyle, cooling down with a big bowl of Rockie Road when the temperature hits 90 degrees isn’t going to work. That doesn’t mean you have to forgo all things sweet and refreshing, though. Here are 5 recipes for sweet and healthy smoothies so that you’ll have a satisfying treat for each day of the week (which will really come in handy in July and August).
Monday: Green Tropics Smoothie- 2 cups spinach, 1 mango, 1 banana, 1 cup pineapple chunks, 1 cup water. Blend ingredients together until smooth, serves 2. 150 calories per serving.
Tuesday: Honeydew-Kiwifruit Smoothie- 2 cups cubed honeydew melon, 1 small Granny Smith apple (peeled, cored and cut up), 1 kiwi, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 cup ice cubes. Blend all ingredients (except ice) until smooth. Add ice cubes and blend until slushy, serves 3. 115 calories per serving.
Wednesday: Golden Nectar Smoothie- 2 cups fresh squeezed orange juice, 1/4 cup raw honey, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 2 teaspoons finely grated ginger, 2 bananas. Blend ingredients together until smooth, serves 4. 126 calories per serving.
Thursday: Jade Zinger Cucumber Smoothie- 1 cucumber (peeled, seeded, chopped), 3 tablespoons mint leaves finely chopped, 1 1/2 cups apple juice, 1 cup lemon sorbet, 1 cup ice cubes. Blend ingredients together until smooth, serves 2. 199 calories per serving.
Friday: Banana, Berry and Buttermilk Popsicles- 1 1/2 cups low-fat buttermilk, 1 banana, 1 1/2 cups fresh/frozen berries, 1/4 cup honey. Blend ingredients together until smooth. Pour into Popsicle molds and freeze, makes 10 Popsicles. 75 calories each. (not a smoothie, I know, but Popsicles are essential summer food!)
