Have you ever tried to watch Grey’s Anatomy with someone who knows something about medicine? “That would never happen!” they complain. “That’s not how that disease works! Doctors can’t do that!” Etc. Same with ER…House…Chicago Hope…Hawthorne…Royal Pains…Miami Medical…Trauma.

Okay, so the medical show isn’t anything new. But ABC’s new series Boston Med, which premieres tonight at 10, is different: instead of pretty actors with soapy love lives, the show is a reality series about real doctors at Massachusetts General, Brigham and Women’s, and Children’s. These institutions are some of the best hospitals in the country, attracting top doctors and med students from around the world.

From ABC’s website: Boston Med picks up where the Peabody Award-winning Hopkins left off, going even deeper into the lives of caregivers and the cutting edge medical cases they confront inside the walls of America’s top hospitals.

According to Philly.com, Boston Med is peppered with interesting characters, including a second-generation African American surgeon who gets mistaken by patients for a janitor, a hard-core Red Sox fan from the Boston version of Northeast Philadelphia who has been voted nurse of the year, a plastic surgeon who fled the repression of Czechoslovakia in the late ’80s who performs the nation’s second-ever face transplant and a Christian Texan who refuses to perform abortions.
