ABC News reports that A Massachusetts town is in uproar because the local school district approved a plan to give condoms to students without their parents’ consent – even elementary school kids.
In the Provincetown School District, the town voted unanimously for a sex education policy allowing all children — elementary and high school students — to seek out a counselor and obtain condoms without parental permission. Then came the uproar: giving condoms to first graders?? Check out the video:
On Thursday, Governor Deval Patrick called the School Superintendent Beth Singer to weigh in, saying sex education programs should be “age appropriate” and that “parents ought to be involved.” Singer, who wrote the policy, agreed to take the governor’s advice and review the matter with the board. She said the policy had been “misinterpreted and misunderstood.”
“We were never giving condoms to elementary school children,” Singer said. “It’s for sexually active people, and we don’t see that as relevant to elementary school.”
Now, everyone just calm down. They weren’t being handed out like candy…the policy allowed for students to approach counselors, and then get condoms. Sure, it’s silly to give condoms to children who are too young to understand what sex is, but don’t think that your 6th grader doesn’t know what’s going on. More information is better! If kids aren’t told about sex, the result isn’t abstinence…it’s unplanned pregnancy.
