Anti-Energy Drinks Aim to Calm Our Buzz

Coffee has long been the pick-me-up of choice, but recently energy drinks like Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar have replaced java as the go-to energizing beverage.

Well, now that we are all good and wired 24/7, it seems we now need the antidote to the energy drink buzz we all suffer from, and new ‘relaxation shots’ that are hitting the market should do the trick.

These “relaxation shots”  are anti-energy drinks designed to take away the buzz their caffeinated counterparts deliver. There are already more than 350 kinds of relaxation drinks on the market, according to Agata Kaczanowska, an analyst with the research company IBISWorld, like Unwind who’s slogan is “Tired of being wired?” and Drank who promises to “Slow your roll.”

And just like energy drinks, anti-energy drinks make seemingly impossible claims.  Drank also claims it can help prevent jet lag, Blue Cow says it can improve concentration, relieve anxiety and irritability from fatigue, and even diminish PMS symptoms and another brand, Mini Chill, says that because it lessens tension, consumers have reported better sex lives.

The relaxation drink industry is expected to generate $500 million in sales revenue this year, according to IBISWorld, a year-over-year increase of about 327 percent.

These drinks aren’t just non-caffeinated, they often contain melatonin, valerian root and rose hips, and are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  While melatonin is sometimes prescribed for jet lag, and is available over the counter, it affects other hormones, can alter sperm count and interacts with some prescription medications.

Not all relaxation drinks are the same, though.  Some do not contain melatonin.  Some have a lot of sugar; others have none. The brands mentioned above all say on their Web sites that the levels they recommend are safe, but doctors say there is no way to know for sure.

There are some natural ways to calm down, even when you’re hyped on caffeine.  Try a nice hot bath, drinking warm milk, or reading a book to get your calm on.
