If your doctor recently prescribed blood work to determine your overall heart health, chances are they measured your triglycerides and cholesterol levels during testing. Triglycerides are lipids found in the blood. Stored inside your body’s fat cells, they are formed when you eat too many calories. Your body then releases these unused triglycerides for an extra energy boost between meals.
For those of us who enjoy carbs and fats and tend to eat more than we should, excess triglycerides could lead to a condition known as hypertriglyceridemia. Hypertriglyceridemia, or high triglycerides, if left untreated could lead to metabolic syndrome, morbid obesity, diabetes, heart attack, kidney failure and pancreatitis.
Over time, consistent high triglyceride levels can contribute to artery hardening and atherosclerosis, which could lead to heart attack, stroke and heart disease.
Before your blood tests, you will be required to fast for nine to 12 hours. Cheating before the bloodwork could adversely affect your test results, so try to schedule your blood work in the morning so you can fast while you sleep. It may take three to seven days to get your blood work results, so be sure to schedule a follow-up with your doctor to sit down and discuss the results.
Sit down with your doctor to go over your blood work results. Triglyceride levels less than 150 are normal. 150 to 199 are borderline high. If your levels are between 200 and 499, your triglycerides are high. Levels over 500 are very high, and you could be at serious risk for hypertriglyceridemia
Finding out your triglyceride levels are high isn’t the end of the world. Even if your levels are very high, you can still take steps to improve your diet and begin a doctor-recommended exercise regimen. It may require a major lifestyle change, but the hard work will pay off in the long run.
There are a number of different types of food that can help lower your triglycerides. Fruits and vegetables containing vitamin C, such as rhubarb, for example, may lower your triglycerides. Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish like salmon, sardines and tuna are another diet must when aiming to lower cholesterol and triglycerides. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends eating omega-3 healthy foods at least twice a week to improve cholesterol, triglycerides and overall heart health.
Whole grain breads and cereals, as well as fiber-packed fruits and vegetables are also known to help stabilize your triglycerides. As an added benefit, food high in fiber aids in digestion, as well as helping you achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
You’ll want to avoid certain types of food also. Counting calories may seem like a hassle, but in the long run, counting and maintaining a healthy intake of calories for your body type and weight can not only help lower existing excess triglycerides, but ensure you don’t worsen your situation.
Foods to avoid include those containing high amounts of sugar and carbohydrates. White flour-based snacks and treats glazed in sugary goodness may sound like a good idea, but they pack your body with excess sugar and calories you don’t need. Not only do those high sugar, carb-packed goodies contain more sugar than the body can process, they also have trans fats. Some snack foods may say they are trans fat-free, but you can tell if an item you want to snack on contains trans fats by checking the label for partially hydrogenated oil.
Another high sugar, carbohydrate no-no for those diagnosed with high triglycerides is alcohol. Even a small amount of alcohol each day could raise your triglyceride levels.
If you happen to be a cigarette smoker, quitting smoking now could greatly lower your triglycerides. Studies show smokers tend to have higher concentrations of triglycerides than nonsmokers. Cigarette smokers inadvertently affect their triglycerides, as smoking reduces the body’s HDL, or good cholesterol levels. HDL cholesterol helps filter excess triglycerides from the blood, so along with all the other health reasons you might consider quitting smoking, you may want to factor in your triglyceride levels.
You hear a lot of talk these days about the different types of fat, and how they affect your health. Eliminating fat completely is not the answer, but learning to discriminate between healthy fat and unhealthy fat is essential. Learn to trade saturated fats, like those found in fatty cuts of meat and skin, for monounsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fat can be found in nuts, olive oil, peanut and canola oil.
Along with healthy diet changes, you will also want to begin a regular exercise regimen. In order to even impact your triglyceride and cholesterol levels, it’s recommended that you achieve at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise five days each week. Walking, swimming, running, even cleaning can all add up throughout the day, so even if you don’t have full 30 minute segments, break it up into two 15 minute exercise segments.
You can also incorporate exercise into your downtime routines, like watching television or even sitting at your work desk.
Sometimes in extreme conditions, diet and exercise are not enough. Your doctor may prescribe medication or recommend an over-the-counter treatment. Niacin, for example, is a supplement that lowers triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements work well for those who want the benefits they provide without having to eat fish.

Doctors may also prescribe drugs known as statins, which lower LDL cholesterol levels and triglycerides.
It is not recommended that you take an over-the-counter treatment without first talking to your doctor, as some treatments, such as niacin supplements or omega-3 supplements, could interact with other medications and lead to accidental overdose.
Lowering your triglycerides through lifestyle changes such as proper diet and exercise can be difficult. Remember, making a major lifestyle change alone is never easy. Find a support group, or talk to your doctor before undertaking the task. A strong support system is essential to guaranteeing you stay on track while working your way back to a stronger, healthier you.

lillian, you should aslo switch to whole grain wheat bread instead of the white. avacodos are great for lowering trigs. start using wheat flour instead of white flower. aslo, salmon is better for you than regular fish oil pills. stay away from dairy products and if you must have them, get low fat or two percent. oatmeal is awsome, so are high fiber and grains cereal

Well my mothers side of the family have all the heart issues. My uncle died of a heart attack and mom died from a stroke so I hate finding out my LDL is 255 and my triglycerides are 210 when I had it done when I was fasting I can only imagine what they would read after 6pm. I hate that I have to now take fish oil tabs OTC 2 tabs twice a day I just hate it. I don't hardly eat as it is. I am almost a vegan so I don't get it. My doctor said even if I weighed 100lbs I would still have high LDL and Triglycerides because my body produces it in other words I was born this way already. Now that is scary I will never be cured from this no matter what. I just hate it. You all don't know how much I hate it i am not good at taking pills never have been never will be.

i'm hiv+ and due to my meds my trigs are 640 and jump up 200+ points every 3 months. i also have non -parkinsons tremors. i was on loped for 30 days and felt like i had the flu for 28 of them. trigs still jumped 200+ points. meds for tremors prohibit foods high in tyramines and i'm allergic to most soft skined fruits. i'm now on triple fish oil and double niasin and do only 60 carbs a day. between the two diets, many food choices are out. i also eat nothing with more that 2 grams of fat, but i do use olive or canola oils. i leave salt out of most everything. brocoli and egg whites are really wearing thin. any suggestioms on spicing up what foods are left?

Sugar type carbs will cause your triglyceridess to be high. Ask your doctor about trying you on Lavasa. It is a prescription omega 3 fatty acid and works great to lower triglycerides.

Three years ago I bought a Vita-mix blender, which by the way has been used by the Cancer Centers of America for over 20 years. I am not plugging this product and it is expensive at around 350.00 but what it can do with fruits and vegetables is amazing. I have genectic high clolestral levels but now my LDL is 130 HDL 102 and Triglerides are 78. The answer is in fruits, veggies, fiber and fish. Only use Olive oil, cocoanut oil. Butter is better than any thing else in moderation. Drink almond milk, rice milk they are actually good. I hate oatmeal but in one of my drinks I do not know its there. Also exercise by walking your dog twice daily and at home exercises three times a week, 15 minutes. Good Luck. I weigh 118lbs, female and I am 5'2" and 60 years old.

I'm so proud of all of you that are trying so hard and now talking to each other (that's great)about what you can do to get better. That's definitely the first step, wanting to get better. I'm recovering from a quadruple by-pass surgery last fall and must tell you to keep on trying, don't give up-EVER. I used to run marathons, although I'm certainly not built for such activity,so I have a strong heart. But that is not good, a strong heart trying to push blood through clogged arteries. I did wonderful on Jenny C's program and lost 35lbs and I think it was because you eat 6 times a day. Everything got in order sugar, cholesterol, tryglcerides and I was even taken off all diabetes 2 medicine. I took on a new job and gained back 25lbs and all my problems came back. So it now is a "Way of Life" that I have to commit to, instead of just a diet. Sorry this was so "wordy", may God bless and keep working at it,it will be worth it.

My Mom's side of family, all women died of heart disease/heart attack/strokes. My brother has had 3 heart attacks, he's 57! First at 50. I am only one in family that never smoked, always exercise and eat healthy. I was on Crestor for awhile and stopped. I am afraid of all the side affects of medications. For 10 years now I supplement my diet with Niacin, Fish Oils, B Complex and CQ-10. No fried foods, no red meat, lots of chicken, pork, greens, fruit and legumes in my diet. Good Choles 56, LDL 157, and Triglys 55. Over all last blood tests showed 238. Doc now believes it is hereditary and because my Good Choles is so high. I now drink Dr. Oz's smoothie at least 3Xs/wk which includes: 1 C natural fruit juice, 1/2 banana, 2T Protein Powder, 1 T Wheatgerm, 2 T Ground Flaxseed and 1 T Physlluim Husk Powder. I drink Red or White wine every night and drink lots of water all day. My Cholesterol fluctuates yearly so this is a life long commitment to stay heart healthy.

I just lowered my triglycerides from 186 to 101 in 3 mos, without meds. I avoided sugar and processed foods, increased my good fats quite a bit and limited my carbs... I also exercise 4 to 5 days a week. I followed "Food Rules" by Catherine Shanahan and "Deep Nutrition" by the same author. Amazing results. After several years of trying to lower with statins. Statins are a very dangerous drug, that and conventional wisdom of eating low fat. I ate full fat everything. Including whole organic milk and yogurt.

Triglycerides levels were ok up until a year ago. Went to the Hospital with severe stomach cramps. My primary Dr. thought it was caused by Gall Bladder since I had a lot of stones. Triglyceride levels were 4500 before surgery. We thought we had the problem solved. Had blood work Trigs were up to 5200. Doctors say it's hereditary. I am on Lovaza(very expensive) Niacin, Tricor and Crestor. Thought everything was working out. 8 months after surgery landed in Hospital with Pancriatitus attack.. Trigs were 7500..... Yes!!!!!

Ray - gosh, I don't no what to think about 7500. Wow. I'll pray for you. I have Diabetes, Congestive Heart Failure, Arrhyhtmia, stents and an ICD. I recently started a controled exercise program at Kettering Medical Center. My blood pressure has been consistently LOW, 80/50. They wouldn't let me finish my routine today and sent me home. Got a voicemail from my internist office - had another blood panel, this one within 3 weeks of my last. It was ridiculous: (Should be) Cholesterol 382 <199 Triglycerides 2000+ <149 A-1C 10.3 <5.6 I'm a hot mess. I weigh about 285 stand 6'2" and i look reasonably good physically...wow looks can be deceiving. I have weighed close to 400 but have been below 330 for 20 years and at my current weight 24+ months. My cardioloogist wants me to lose more, but is okay with the 285 v 330.

I 79 and have history of elevated chol and trig with BP problems . The solution is eat less, execise and reduce your weighed. Suggest play tennis or practice Karate. But eat less and take you weigh often. Do not take Lipitor or the other costly muscle wasting junk. For choles : Red rice yeast for Cosco. For men with prostate problems take prostate combo , and also stinging nettle. You can get good product and prices for (just google Swanson vitamins, they are in S.Dacota, USA. I have tested myself for PSA and it went from 7 to 4.0 in aboug 8weeks. Do not take Avodart unless you want dry ejacultes. I also had cholet 320 and it is now 186 mgs. You must also follow good diet and reduce you in-take of calories. Respectfully,Jose Yglesias , CLS,ASCP

When my triglycerides went up, I cut out the sugar: pastries, desserts, soda. Dropped triglycerides and 20 extra lbs., even while going through menopause. David: at 6'2", 285 lbs is still obese. With all your health problems, I would suggest looking for another MD, a nutritionist, and a health coach. Good luck.

My triglicerides are borderline high. So I went on line to find out how to lower them. Low glycemic eating seems to me the most sensible way I should do it. Since I haven't seen anyone post alist of foods to eat, I thought this might be helpful. I began with two books that explain how to control your blood sugar level. The first one is The Glucose Revolution by Brand-miller and three other authors. The second is The Glucose Revolution Pocket Guide to the top 100 low glycemic foods. By the same authors. That will give you a list of healthy foods and get you started. I use Agave Nectar in foods that I want sweetened. It's low glycemic and it mixes well in hot or cold foods - AND it's all natural from the agave cactus. I use it in coffee, oatmeal cookie recipe, and when making my own applesauce. You can find it by the peanut butter and honey in your market. I also eat pumpernickel bread - it's amazing!!! Not the little squares to make finger foods with - Pepperide Farms makes a softer bread more suitable for sandwiches. If you like jam on your toast, try all fruit spreads. You won't want to go back to the sugary stuff. It's too soon to tell how well this is working, however, I feel 1000 times better for eating healthy!!

Just had blood work done. Hdl is 86mg/dl and Ldl is 72/dl and Trigylcerides is 64 mg/dl. I eat what I want, drink what I want, but I have always taken fish oil. No cakes, pies etc. But at the end of the day, Whatever and which drink I choose doesn't seem to effect my blood work. Also, I am just a tad plump. Not a lot of fried foods, lots of beans and not a lot of fruits. Not a lot of eating out. Mostly cook something at home. Much better for you. Nan

Just had y levels checked-the MD did not give advance warning to fast 9-12 hours before. My tri level was 184. I had breakfast and lunch that day and I'm sure I had a treat or two. How valid is that number and should I ask for a re-count. (I've been watching my carbs etc. Whaddya think?)
